“It can be hard to balance cultures with very different values. Sometimes those values can actually complement each other. We just have to figure out what works best for us.” - Linh Do, LCSW
When love, culture, and expectations all get tangled together.
You can love your family deeply and still feel stuck when the life that feels right for you does not quite match the one they imagined.
Maybe it is choosing a career they do not understand, dating someone they would not have chosen, wanting more independence, or trying to say “I’m not doing okay” when mental health was rarely really talked about at home.
You may know what you want, then hear “We just want what’s best for you” and immediately start wondering if you are being selfish, ungrateful, or disappointing everyone.
Or maybe you are the parent trying to help, but conversations about school, work, relationships, or the future keep ending with your teen shutting down and both of you feeling misunderstood.
You don’t have to choose one side of yourself.
You can make choices about work, relationships, independence, or your future without feeling like every difference means you are rejecting your family.
You can tell the people you love what you actually want without spending the rest of the day wondering if you were selfish or disrespectful.
Families can talk about school, dating, mental health, or big life decisions without every conversation ending in tension, shutdown, or “you just don’t understand.”
You can keep the parts of your culture, family, and values that matter to you while changing the patterns that no longer feel right.
The goal is more understanding, more connection, and more room for everyone to be themselves without feeling like they have to lose each other in the process.
Why Nurture & Connect Therapy Center?
I understand what it can be like to move between cultures and generations, and I often think of myself as a translator between the two.
You won’t have to convince me that family loyalty, sacrifice, achievement, or respect can matter deeply while also being complicated, and I’m not going to assume that your culture or your family is simply “the problem.”
We’ll slow things down, make room for everyone’s perspective, and get curious about what is underneath the conflict, whether that is love, fear, pressure, hurt, or a wish to feel closer that keeps coming out the wrong way.
